The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) website is an important communication tool used by students, educators, parents, constituents, and the general public. However, the website was not dynamic (static), was difficult to navigate for visitors, and did not meet ADA compliance requirements.
A new website would need to be modifiable by staff with basic skills without needing a webmaster, tested and optimized for a variety of devices, include a workflow for approving and publishing content, and meet ADA / Section 508 compliance requirements.
Navigation North lead project discovery, providing a content inventory and stakeholder surveys. Our team moved forward with crafting information architecture, navigation framework, wireframes, and responsive designs. After approval on these items, our technical development included theme adjustments to capture the look and feel of NMPED, developing custom plugins and integrations, and providing quality assurance to successfully launch on time and on budget.
We also worked with a third-party testing firm to validate website compliance and provided NMPED staff with best-practices to ensure newly added content meets compliance requirements. We also provided several in-person trainings to the staff in New Mexico and aided with other orientations.
